My First Week as an Unemployed Autoworker in Detroit

It’s been seven days since that one fateful day when my boss informed me that I would be losing my job.  Within the next 30 minutes, I had cleared out my desk and driven off the premises for the last time. I did have some inside information that my 8 years on the job would be ending soon so it wasn’t a complete surprise. Ironically, my time at the company coincided perfectly with GWBs time in office – almost to the day!

After 7 days, I must admit I don’t miss the job that much and am actually feeling pretty positive and energetic – almost enthusiastic.  We’ll see how long this lasts…   My diet has improved, my weight is down, my spirits are flying.  perhaps my job was too constraining mentally and physically – especially with the perpetual threat of downsizing.  So leaving was the best thing for me I believe.

I’ve been spending my days working for my wife in Real Estate doing everything from photographing properties to installing lawn signs to shovelling walks.  I’ve reconnected to old friends and classmates.  And I’ve spent quality time with my son by taking him sledding after school and even builidng a snow tunnel in the backyard.  If it were up to my son, I should have been laid off a lot sooner!

We are looking at cutting costs of course and many of these actions are probably long overdue.  That is, getting rid of things and services which we really didn’t need such as 100 different channels on TV.  Broadband wireless access is gone too now that I’m essentially working from the home wireless network.  Of course, the money won’t last forever and either I need to find a job or my wife will have to sell a lot more houses.

On the job front, I’ve started networking and refining my resume but I will focus the next weeks on setting a direction for the job search.  I want to find job that will truly challenge me and keep me going for years to come. Losing my job has become my life’s greatest opportunity and I want to make the most of it!

New Product Idea: Automotive Design Star Ratings

There are star ratings for safety, top ten lists, car of the year, car of whatever but how about a Star rating for design?  It would be completely subjective of course since everyone is an expert when it comes to design. One way to do this would be to have a rating panel made up of industry ‘experts’ such as former designers, design analysts, etc. This would be just like having movie critics post their reviews on Yahoo or financial analysts publish their stock recommendations.  In addition, the great unwashed masses could also rate designs as well so you could have a peoples’ rating . The ratings could fall into the following categories:

5 Stars – This car would be a timeless classic, a pure, authentic, and evolved and mature design sure to remain beautiful generation after generation. The car’s exterior and interior design would exude simplicity and sophistication.  Every form, line and volume would have perfect balance and emotion.

4 Stars - This car has a superb design with something new and exciting but with something missing or with a critical flaw. Perhaps it’s too much design or not enough.  It’s a good-competent design catches the eye for a second look but fails to ignites the senses. An example would be the Mini which is an outstanding car in almost every way but the interior remains over designed compared to the exterior and the total car.

3 Stars – This car has a fair design that you really don’t notice for being too good or bad, a passable attempt at designing a car that will be soon forgotten. The car may have something special about it however…

2 Stars - The car has a  poor design that never should have left the drawing board, a bad design that that leaves people wondering why did they even spend the money to design it in the first place!  Still, it’s a car that is not terribly offensive.

1 Star – This car has a terrible design that lacks style, substance, and even novelty, a horrible design that insults the senses for it’s lack of sensibility.

Zero – a complete waste

I’ve already started using this scale on some of my posts.

Very Cool Jaguar Videos

Jaguar’s advertising and promotional videos have done a great job creating superb imagery around the product.  These videos have “cool” music and visuals with lots of “beautiful” people enjoying the good life, going out to clubs in their Jag’s (after docking the yacht or landing the private jet).  The first video shows the C-XF concept car which by itself is a marvelous car – but with the video behind it at the  recent Detroit show on a towering wall – the display was mesmerizing!  Too bad the production XF sedan lost the edge and sharpness of the concept.

My Favorite Cars – Honda Fit/Jazz

04_2009hondafitThe 2009 Honda Fit is the second generation of Honda’s smallest car for the U.S. market.  It reminds me of a mini space shuttle since it’s a lot of car in a very small space.  The look is modern, crisp and contemporary city car with a nice Sport package (shown). This is one spunky little machine with wheels at the corners and tall seating position surrounded by a lot of glass.  There are front and rear quarter windows!  The new model loses some of the pokemon look for the last model and sports a tightened up rear end.  The gives up a bit of practicality for a big improvement in style. 4 Stars

My Favorite Cars – Audi A5/S5

a5_par_0062_imageThere are plenty of European sporting coupes but if you are looking for something a little different to stand apart from the 3 series crowd, Audi’s A5/S5 is the car.  With plenty of coupes in recent years, the A5/S5 goes a little further in terms of design. Based on 2003′s Nuvolari concept vehicle, the exterior is perhaps the most emotive and expressive of any recent Audi production design including the TT and R8.  The main body side line rises above each wheel giving the body a lean, althetic look vs. the starkly conservative side views of other Audi products.  The front has the corporate nose which looks good to me.  And the interior ranks highly as well in terms of appearance and visual quality.  This is one great overall package for a sophisticated coupe!  4 Stars
